Aeration $Starting at $200

Lawn aeration is one of the best thing you can do to your lawn annually. Most golf courses and sports fields aerate there lawn 5-6 times a year. Over time lawn become compacted and hard. The process of aeration is to relive compacted soil, reduce thatch naturally and allow air water and nutrients to get to the root zone. Did you know that a healthy lawn should have approximately 25 percent oxygen, 25 percent water, 45 percent minerals, and 5 percent organic matter? Chemical fertilizers have a high amount of salt along with our sprinkler water. This is a major contributor to compacted soil making it impossible for roots to grown deeper and expand. Lawn aeration is one of the most important services for a healthy lawn and should be done in the early fall.

What is a Core Aerator?

Two main aerating tools exist — a spike aerator and a plug aerator. With a spike aerator, you simply use the tool to poke holes into the ground with a solid tine, or fork. Plug aerators remove a core or plug of grass and soil from the lawn. For the best results, use an aerating tool or machine that actually removes plugs of soil. Poking holes is less effective and can actually cause additional compaction in the areas around the holes.

The most common aeration tool removes soil plugs approximately 2 — 3 inches deep and 0.5 — 0.75 inches in diameter, and about 2 — 3 inches apart. The core than lays on top of the soil where it takes about 2-3 to break down back into the soil.

Did you ever go to your local garden center and pick up a bag of seed and just throw it on the ground and after a week the bag promised you would have the greenest lawn on the block? We used to until we got proper education on growing grass. Growing quality grass takes much longer than a week and is a science that requires much more care in the beginning stages of its life. Like humans it needs good oxygen, water and plenty of food to survive. While chemical fertilizers are often great at keeping pests and other harmful insects off your grass, they are not so good at actually providing the soil with the proper nutrients it needs to produce long term health and vigor for your lawn.

At OLS we developed an all-inclusive program that takes care of both improving soil conditions and naturally fighting off disease and pests. The question is often asked.
